Seven Reasons Your Heart Is Amazing

Sure, you’re a heartbreaker. But how much do you really know about this incredible body part? Here we’ll give you a few insights into just how amazing your heart truly is. And don’t forget, February is Heart Health Month.

  1. Your heart works hard. It takes about the same amount of force for your heart to pump as it does to grip and squeeze a tennis ball. Give it a try! At 70 squeezes per minute, we guarantee you’ll get tired!
  2. The heart beats to its own drum—2.5 billion times over. The heart is a muscle, and, like all muscles, it becomes stronger with exercise. The stronger the heart, the more efficient it is, requiring fewer beats to pump blood throughout the body. The average adult heart beats approximately 100,000 times per day, 3.6 million times per year, or 2.5 billion times in a lifetime. What if you could shave a few hundred thousand beats off your heart by simply getting active for at least 30 minutes per day?
  3. It goes with the flow. Always. Even though a healthy heart weighs less than one pound, it pumps about 2,000 gallons of blood each day. A kitchen faucet would need to be turned on all the way for at least 45 years to equal the amount of blood that is pumped by the heart in the average lifetime.
  4. The heart works under pressure. Your heart is amazing! It can supply blood to all parts of the body within 20 seconds. However, having chronically high blood pressure is not a good thing. The increased pressure can damage the lining of the arteries, which causes the lining to thicken. So take steps to lower or maintain your blood pressure, which can greatly reduce your risk for heart disease and stroke. Did you know that nearly one in three adults (about 67 million) have high blood pressure, and more than half of them don’t have it under control?
  5. It goes the distance. If you were to lay an adult’s blood vessels end to end, it would equate to well over 60,000 miles. That’s enough to wrap around the world twice.
  6. The heart is resilient. It’s not breaking news that smoking increases your risk of heart disease. But it is good to know that your heart has your back if you are ready to kick the habit to the curb. Within just a few minutes of quitting, your heart says a big thank you and assists in the healing process. Quitting smoking has immediate as well as long-term benefits for you and your loved ones.
  7. The human heart takes care of #1. The heart's four chambers and four valves ensure that blood only goes one way, either in or out. Even though the heart pumps blood to all body parts, it supplies the arteries that supply the cells of the heart first.

Give thanks to your heart by practicing healthy habits! According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are a number of things you can to do give thanks and take care of your heart including:
