Pacificsource Health Plans Boise Employees Clara Comes and Jingyi Su Complete Rigorous Requirements for Actuary Designation

(BOISE, Idaho)—Clara Comes and Jingyi Su, two Boise office team members for PacificSource Health Plans, recently completed the rigorous coursework and testing requirements to earn the distinguished Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) designation.

According to the Society of Actuaries, it takes thousands of hours of study, rigorous professional exams, and extensive online coursework to earn the ASA designation. On average, it takes six to 10 years to earn the ASA designation, which makes the accomplishments of Su and Comes all the more notable as each of them completed the requirements in just four years.

“Many actuaries spend upwards of a decade working to achieve ASA designation, and for Ms. Comes and Ms. Su to complete their coursework and pass their exams so early in their careers is a testament to the tremendous talent they bring to the PacificSource actuary team,” said Josh Bishop, Vice President and Idaho Regional Director for PacificSource Health Plans. “Their analytical skills, market expertise and business acumen are vital to our long-term financial health, and allow us to establish rates that are economically sustainable in the highly competitive and ever-changing health insurance marketplace.”

Comes joined PacificSource in 2011 and currently serves as manager of the commercial pricing team, where her primary responsibilities include individual and small group rate filings, and support of the pricing for large group, fully insured, and self funded products in Idaho, Oregon, and Montana. Comes earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Idaho, and her Master of Science from the University of Oregon.

Su, who is also a member of the American Academy of Actuaries, joined PacificSource in 2014 after graduating from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a degree in Actuarial Science, and plays a key role on PacificSource’s commercial pricing team.

Through a combination of mathematics, analytical skills, and business knowledge, an actuary in the health insurance industry evaluates the marketplace and determines rate structures and pricing by estimating future premiums and claims costs.
