Urgent and life-threatening

If a medical problem is urgent and life-threatening, call 911 or go directly to the nearest emergency room.

Examples include:

  • Trouble breathing, choking, severe head injury
  • Seizure, severe burns, poison ingestion
  • Chest pain, stroke, heavy bleeding

For medical emergencies, your plan pays benefits at an in-network level, even for treatment at out-of-network facilities. However, emergency room visits are costly, and may sometimes involve waiting for treatment.

Urgent, but not life-threatening

If your situation is serious but not life-threatening, a call to your doctor’s office is a good idea. Even if they are closed, an on-call doctor may be able to help.

Urgent care facilities can be appropriate for cases such as:

  • Cold or flu, bronchitis, sinus infection
  • Strep throat, ear infection, vomiting
  • Diarrhea, minor burns, cuts, or fractures

It’s a good idea to follow up with your doctor after visiting an urgent care or emergency facility.

Call your doctor’s office

If the office is closed, an on-call doctor may be able to help. Need to choose a doctor? Visit our Find a Doctor page to access our online provider directory where you can search by name, specialty, location, and other attributes. You’ll want to search for doctors who are in your provider network, which you can find on your member ID.

See a doctor by phone or video

The doctor you normally see in person may be available via a telehealth appointment (an appointment that takes place on the phone or by video.) To learn more, contact them directly or check their website.

If you're unable to access telehealth with your own doctor, our telehealth  partner, Teladoc®, is an affordable alternative included with most PacificSource plans. Their board-certified physicians, available on demand, day or night, can address issues such as sinus pain, pink eye, bronchitis, allergies, flu, urinary tract infections, and other infections.

Learn more on our Telehealth page, or get started by visiting Teladoc.com, or by calling Teladoc at 855-201-7488
