PacificSource Foundation for Health Improvement Awards $105,000 in Grants to Five Nonprofit Organizations in Oregon, Idaho, and Montana

Grants aimed at organizations that serve vulnerable populations by providing community-based strategies or direct access to health care

(SPRINGFIELD, Ore.) May 24, 2016— The PacificSource Foundation for Health Improvement has awarded $105,000 in grants to five nonprofit organizations in Oregon, Idaho, and Montana that support vulnerable populations in the communities PacificSource Health Plans serves. Each grant recipient organization aims to provide access to high-quality health care, test and implement innovative models, improve community health, and/or to lower costs across the system.

“The PacificSource Foundation for Health Improvement exists to address the health care and human services needs of underserved populations throughout Oregon, Idaho, and Montana, and community grants are one of the ways we work to accomplish this” said Marian Blankenship, Executive Director of PacificSource Foundation for Health Improvement. “We are excited to be able to support these well-deserving organizations that perform incredibly important work in their respective communities.”

The grant recipients include:

Boise Rescue Mission (SW Idaho; $10,000): BRM provides emergency shelter, transitional housing, substance abuse recovery, education, job training and basic needs assistance to low-income and homeless populations. The $10,000 grant will fund direct mental health-care services and case management.

MIKE Program (Portland; $20,000): The MIKE (Multicultural Integrated Kidney Education) program combines health education, promotion, positive youth development and promotion of careers in health care. The program has a strong focus on engaging students who are disproportionately affected by health disparities. The $20,000 grant will support and expand existing programs in three Portland-area high schools.

Oregon Latino Health Coalition (Washington County, Oregon; $35,000): ORLHC is a collaboration of individuals and organizations dedicated to promoting health and wellness and reducing disparities for the Oregon Latino community through prevention, education and sharing of resources. This $35,000 grant helps to fund an outreach pilot, using a Community Health Worker model to expand access to prenatal care.

Special Olympics Oregon (South and Central Oregon; $20,000): The $20,000 grant supports the Oregon Team Wellness program, which leverages Special Olympics Oregon’s expertise and infrastructure to serve developmentally and intellectually disabled Oregonians. The program focuses on addressing health disparities through interactive fitness and nutrition activities.

West Mont (Helena, Mont.; $20,000): This $20,000 grant supports West Mont’s Ron’s Place, a newly established medical group home for medically fragile and disabled populations. The home provides integrated services (including physical and mental health care) in a medical home environment.
